Week 7

Monday, February 14, 2011 to Friday, February 18, 2011  We are still in Biloxi, MS. Sorry we missed the New York Central’s get-together. It has been sunny and in the high 60s every day except today, when it was in the mid 70s – almost too hot for me. Elaine has been sewing up a storm and I’ve been waxing the coach. I’m about one quarter done. We’ve been riding our bikes almost every day.

I “discovered” Rouse’s Market. It is a large grocery store chain in Mississippi and Louisiana. They have all kinds of local seafood, Cajun and Creole spices and sauces, and other great foods. I made my first Jambalaya with chicken and Andouille sausage. I used a mix but it was still really good.

We’ve only been to the casinos once this week. We went to the Hard Rock yesterday to try our luck in their free slot tournament. We didn’t place and we lost a few bucks besides.

We’ve met three couples from New York (actually two and a half as we haven’t met Joe’s other half yet). Janice and Gordon are from Norwood, Joan and Ken are full-timers from Oneonta and Joe and ??? are from Memphis, NY. All are fifth wheelers so no new members for the New York Centrals.

We went to Sicily’s Pizza tonight. It is an all you can eat buffet with a dozen or more kinds of pizza (Cajun Shrimp is my favorite). They also have salads, soups and various pastas. Tonight was their seafood night. Their seafood gumbo was very good, the crawfish bisque so-so but the Baked Catfish Ragusa was the best catfish I’ve had since we’ve been gone.

We are going back in to New Orleans tomorrow. It is supposed to be partly sunny and 73. Elaine said she may wear shorts! If so, watch for pictures on the web site. Sunday I plan to make my first seafood gumbo. I bought a bottled roux but everything else will be from scratch. Elaine will be watching the Daytona 500 – Go Kyle!

Saturday, February 19th, 20011, we drove into New Orleans, about an hour and a half. It started out real foggy but turned into a beautiful sunny day with temps in the high 70s. We went to the French Market and had Beignets again at the Café du Monde.

Later Elaine found the Quilted Owl, the only quilt shop in New Orleans. While she was there I was dragged against my will to a nearby Walmart where two more bottles of Crown Royal pulled a knife on me and forced me to purchase them. New Orleans is a rough place!

While sitting on the porch of the Quilted Owl waiting for me to return from my ordeal at Walmart, Elaine saw her very first real-life high speed police car chase. A black pickup truck came racing down the street with a police car chasing him with lights and siren going. The truck went around a curve and a minute later came out a side street across from her and went back the way he came. Now there were three police cars in pursuit. WOW!!

Elaine wants me to clarify a comment in yesterday’s trip report. The “Go Kyle” comment was from me – she does not like him.
