Week 3

June 23, 2008

This was a pretty easy day. We had an easy trip of 121.5 miles to Cody, WY. We went to the Buffalo Bill Dam. Gorgeous scenery along the way.

After the dam, we went to Old Trail Village. It was a collection of saved buildings moved to the original location of Cody.

After supper, we went back into Cody to watch a western shootout. It was kind of lame but fun to watch. And it was free!

This was a frustrating day. Bart spent most of it at JCS America West, a computer services company in Cody, WY. If you are ever in Cody and have computer problems Jimmy, Sherry and James will bust their butts to help you. Unfortunately they couldn’t save Bart’s Vista Laptop. He ended up buying a new Dell with Windows XP so he can keep the web site going for you.

Meanwhile, Kay, Elaine and Bill toured the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. They were halfway through when half of Cody lost power. After a lunch in the half that had power, they returned to complete the tour of the museum.

Drove through Yellowstone National Park to West Yellowstone, Montana today. It was a fairly easy drive of 133.5 miles. Saw some scenery but when you’ve seen 342 snow capped peaks rise majestically in front of you, you’ve seen them all.

Oh my God, look at that one!!                      And look at that one over there!!

That is a tree sticking out of Yellowstone Lake in the lower left. Apparently, it is on an island that is under water due to the melting snow run off.

We found snow, and we crossed the Continental Divide today as Lewis and Clark did over 200 years ago. However we did it a lot easier.

Drove through Yellowstone Park.  On our way to Old Faithful, we got side tracked by an Bald Eagle’s nest.

Then sharp-eyed Kay spotted a black bear climbing a mountain side. He was quite a ways off so the picture has been zoomed in and is a bit fuzzy. But then, bears are fuzzy.

We saw our first elk today, a bull in velvet. Elaine snapped this through the coach window!

Then we saw a whole bunch of small geysers, hot springs and mud pots. We must have seen several hundred at various stops and pull outs. The ranger said some of them were up to 180 F in temperature.

Finally we made it to Old Faithful.

It shot about 100 feet in the air for 4 or 5 minutes. Then on the way back we saw more elk.

Now we’ve had some bad days and tough times but nothing like the fellow below. We figure he was backing up to turn around. The RV is sitting on the chassis. The wrecker could not pull him out. Don’t know how, or if, he got out of there.

This was supposed to be a quiet relaxing day in camp to rest and wind down. Instead, Kay and Elaine did umpteen loads of wash and Bill and Bart spent about 17 hours cleaning several hundred miles of bugs off the windshields and fronts of the coaches (well it seemed like 17 hours). Then Bart discovered a hole in his fantastic fan cover and went up on the roof to check it out. In addition, he found a cracked refrigerator vent cover and two plumbing vent covers with holes from that hail storm. We checked Bill’s roof and found his two air conditioner covers riddled with holes. Nothing that a few yards of duct tape couldn’t fix though.

Then Kay and Bart grabbed their cameras and headed back to the park to try to get some pictures of the bald eagle. Cars are not allowed to stop nor can people walk for a quarter of a mile near the nest so all pictures were at a distance. But we were treated to both eagles being in the nest as well as glimpses of the little ones. A guy had a telescope focused in on the nest and he let us look. We could see the mother eagle feeding the young. It was awesome.

To celebrate the success of their photo safari, Kay and Bart consumed a pitcher of Bart’s famous lemonade (with just a tiny touch of gin in it (hic).
